Tom Snyder RIP

Tom Snyder at his finest.

Snyder was someone who was entertaining in perhaps an unintentional way. He was a good interviewer. But when he did his monologues, his facial ticks and creepy laugh were fun to laugh at late at night in a college dorm room.

I watched the interview and was impressed with both Snyder and Stern - two intelligent people who listened to each other. Snyder’s line of questioning allowed him to probe behind the superficial portrait of Stern, and provided information that people wanted to hear.

However, Snyder’s greatest accomplishment was just staying up late in the early 1970s. Before that time, television ended when Johnny was done. Snyder opened up a whole new frontier, and although some of his successors merely imitated the Johnny model, it’s worth noting that without Snyder, there may never have been a Letterman or a Conan.

    That’s probably true.

My fond memories of Synder are three: 1) Dan Akyroyd’s impression, especially of Snyder’s amusingly creepy laugh; 2) the interaction between Stern and Snyder which lasted for many years before and after this interview, which event was sort of a peak moment; and 3) watching Snyder late at night with my buddies in college and making fun of his facial ticks and creepy laugh.

Oh the memories! Thanks Tom, you will be missed.

BTW: I’m too young to have caught Snyder’s first show but I guess I can catch up through YouTube.
